In the heart of London's legendary Savile Row, there lived a tailor who dared to challenge the establishment and revolutionize menswear. Tommy Nutter, known as the "Rebel Tailor," was a visionary who broke free from tradition and injected a touch of rock 'n' roll into the staid world of bespoke tailoring.

Early Life and Apprenticeship

Thomas "Tommy" Nutter was born in 1943 in Leeds, England. From an early age, he displayed a passion for fashion and art. After leaving school, he apprenticed with a local tailor, honing his skills in the art of bespoke tailoring.

In 1965, Nutter moved to London and joined the prestigious firm of Edward Sexton on Savile Row. There, he worked alongside legendary tailors such as Douglas Hayward and Cyril Castle.

Breaking the Mold

While at Edward Sexton, Nutter began to question the traditional conventions of Savile Row. He believed that tailoring should not be confined to formal wear but could also be expressive and reflective of individual style.

In 1969, Nutter opened his own shop at 35a Savile Row. His shop was a bold departure from the traditional tailoring establishments. It featured bright colors, bold patterns, and a laid-back atmosphere that attracted a clientele of young and fashionable men.

The Rise of Peacock Revolution

Tommy Nutter's designs challenged the stuffy dress codes of the time. He introduced slimmer cuts, flared trousers, and vibrant colors into his suits. This new style, known as the "Peacock Revolution," became synonymous with the Swinging Sixties.

Nutter's suits quickly caught the attention of celebrities and musicians. Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Elton John, and Ringo Starr became loyal clients. Their patronage helped to elevate Nutter's status as a fashion icon.

The Savile Row Establishment

Nutter's innovative designs were met with both admiration and resistance from the established tailors on Savile Row. Some saw him as an upstart who was undermining the tradition of bespoke tailoring.

However, Nutter remained unfazed. He believed that fashion should evolve and reflect the changing times. His success and influence gradually forced the Savile Row establishment to accept the new era of bespoke tailoring.

Personal Style and Legacy

Tommy Nutter was not just a tailor but also a style icon in his own right. He had a flamboyant and eccentric personal style that matched the bold designs he created.

Nutter's legacy extends far beyond the suits he tailored. He inspired a new generation of tailors to push the boundaries of menswear and embrace individuality.

The Rebel Tailor of Savile Row

Tommy Nutter's story is a testament to the power of creativity and the importance of breaking free from convention. Known as the "Rebel Tailor of Savile Row," he revolutionized menswear and left an indelible mark on the fashion world.

His designs continue to inspire and influence tailors and fashion enthusiasts alike. Tommy Nutter's legacy will forever be remembered as the visionary who brought a touch of rebellion to the hallowed halls of Savile Row.
