Pickett was born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1825. He was the son of a wealthy planter and slave owner. Pickett attended West Point, graduating in 1846. He served in the Mexican-American War, where he distinguished himself in battle. After the war, Pickett was stationed in various posts around the country.

In 1861, Pickett resigned from the U.S. Army and joined the Confederate Army. He was quickly promoted to brigadier general and given command of a brigade in A.P. Hill's division. Pickett fought in several battles in the Eastern Theater, including the Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Antietam.

In 1863, Pickett was promoted to major general and given command of a division in Longstreet's corps. He played a significant role in the Battle of Gettysburg, leading the charge on the third day of the battle. The charge was a disaster, and Pickett's division was decimated.

After Gettysburg, Pickett was assigned to command the Department of North Carolina. He remained in this position until the end of the war. After the war, Pickett lived in relative obscurity. He died in 1875 at the age of 44.

Pickett has been the subject of much debate and controversy. Some historians have argued that he was a reckless and incompetent commander who was responsible for the deaths of thousands of his men. Others have argued that Pickett was a brave and skilled commander who was simply outmatched by the Union forces.

Robertson's book provides a fair and balanced assessment of Pickett's life and career. He shows that Pickett was a complex and flawed figure who was both brave and reckless. Robertson also provides a detailed account of the Battle of Gettysburg, showing how Pickett's charge was doomed to failure.

This book is a valuable contribution to the historiography of the Civil War. It is a well-written and well-researched book that provides a comprehensive look at the life and career of General George Pickett. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the Civil War.
