The human blastocyst is a remarkable structure that represents the very beginning of human life. It is a microscopic ball of cells that forms five days after fertilization and contains the potential to develop into a fully grown human being. For decades, scientists have been studying the blastocyst in an effort to understand the mysteries of human development and the causes of birth defects. An Atlas of Human Blastocysts is the culmination of years of research and provides a comprehensive overview of this fascinating and complex structure.

What is a Blastocyst?

A blastocyst is a hollow ball of cells that forms during the early stages of human development. It is made up of an inner cell mass, which will eventually become the embryo, and an outer layer of cells called the trophoblast, which will become the placenta. The blastocyst floats freely in the uterine cavity until it implants into the uterine lining, which usually occurs around 10 days after fertilization.

The Importance of Blastocyst Research

Blastocyst research is essential for understanding the early stages of human development and the causes of birth defects. By studying blastocysts, scientists can learn about the processes that are necessary for normal development and identify the factors that can lead to problems. Blastocyst research has also led to the development of new treatments for infertility and birth defects.
