The Early Days

The knuckleball was first pitched in the late 1800s. It was originally called the "flutter ball" or the "hop ball" because of its unique movement. The first known knuckleballer was a pitcher named Tony Mullane. Mullane was a left-handed pitcher who threw a slow, fluttering pitch that was very difficult to hit. He pitched in the major leagues for 14 seasons and won over 200 games.

Cicotte was a right-handed pitcher who won over 200 games in the major leagues. Wilhelm was a left-handed pitcher who won over 1,000 games in the minor leagues and the major leagues.

Wakefield pitched in the major leagues for 19 seasons and won over 200 games. Hough pitched in the major leagues for 25 seasons and won over 200 games. Dickey won the National League Cy Young Award in 2012.

How to Throw a Knuckleball

The knuckleball is a difficult pitch to throw. It requires a lot of practice and dedication. To throw a knuckleball, the pitcher must grip the ball with his fingertips and release it with a slight downward motion. The ball should be thrown with a lot of backspin. The backspin causes the ball to flutter and defy gravity.
