Early Life and Career

Urbaniak was born in Chicago in 1963. He grew up in a working-class family, and his father was a firefighter. Urbaniak was always fascinated by his father's job, and he knew from a young age that he wanted to follow in his footsteps.

After graduating from high school, Urbaniak joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for four years, and during that time he was deployed to the Middle East. After his military service, Urbaniak returned to Chicago and joined the Chicago Fire Department.

In 1991, Urbaniak moved to Los Angeles and joined the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He was assigned to the Air Operations Section, and he quickly became one of the department's most skilled and experienced winchmen.

A Hero in Action

Urbaniak has been involved in countless rescues over the course of his career. He has saved people from burning buildings, swift-moving waters, and treacherous mountaintops. He has also performed daring rescues of injured hikers and climbers, often in remote and dangerous conditions.

One of Urbaniak's most famous rescues occurred in 2002. A young woman was hiking in the Angeles National Forest when she fell and broke her leg. Urbaniak was dispatched to the scene, and he was able to reach the woman and rescue her using a helicopter.

In 2008, Urbaniak was involved in the rescue of a group of hikers who were stranded on a mountaintop during a snowstorm. Urbaniak was able to use a helicopter to evacuate the hikers, and they were all saved.

Awards and Recognition

Urbaniak has received numerous awards and recognition for his heroic actions. In 2003, he was awarded the Medal of Valor, the Los Angeles County Fire Department's highest honor. He has also received the Air Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal.

In 2018, Urbaniak was inducted into the International Association of Fire Fighters' Hall of Heroes. This honor is given to firefighters who have made significant contributions to the fire service.
