In the annals of boxing history, few fights are as storied or controversial as the heavyweight championship bout between Tony Galento and Joe Louis on June 28, 1939. Galento, a colorful and charismatic challenger, entered the ring as a heavy underdog against the seemingly invincible Louis. But in a stunning upset, Galento knocked Louis down in the first round, sending shockwaves through the boxing world.

The fight was a classic clash of styles. Galento, known as the "Two-Ton Terror," was a swarmer who relied on his size and strength to overwhelm his opponents. Louis, on the other hand, was a boxer-puncher with lightning-fast hands and devastating power.

The fight started at a furious pace, with both men trading punches. Galento, despite his size disadvantage, was able to get inside Louis's reach and land some heavy blows. In the first round, Galento caught Louis with a left hook that sent him crashing to the canvas. It was the first time that Louis had ever been knocked down in his professional career.

Louis was visibly shaken by the knockdown, but he managed to get up and continue fighting. However, Galento continued to press the attack, and Louis was forced to fight on the defensive for much of the fight.

In the fourth round, Galento landed a series of punches that sent Louis reeling. Louis was on the verge of being knocked out, but he managed to stay on his feet and survive the round.

However, Galento's relentless attack had taken its toll on Louis. In the sixth round, Louis was knocked down again, and this time he was unable to get up. Galento had pulled off one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

The fight was controversial, with many people believing that Galento should have been disqualified for hitting Louis below the belt. However, the referee ruled that the punches were legal, and Galento was declared the winner.

The victory made Galento a national hero. He was celebrated for his courage and determination, and he became one of the most popular boxers in the world. However, his career was cut short by injuries, and he never again reached the same heights as he did on that fateful night in 1939.

The fight between Galento and Louis remains one of the most memorable and controversial in boxing history. It is a story of an underdog who triumphed over adversity, and it is a reminder that anything is possible in the world of sports.
