By 1987, Bowden had led FSU to its first national championship. The Seminoles defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 31-14 in the Orange Bowl to cap off a perfect 12-0 season.
FSU won its second national championship in 1999, defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies 46-29 in the Sugar Bowl. The Seminoles finished the season with a 12-1 record and were ranked No. 1 in the final AP Poll.
In addition to his two national championships, Bowden led FSU to 12 ACC championships and 25 consecutive bowl appearances. He is the winningest coach in FBS history with 389 victories.
