The Early Life of Dr. Jonas Salk

Jonas Salk was born in New York City on October 28, 1914. His parents, Daniel and Dora Salk, were Russian immigrants who worked hard to provide a good life for their children. Jonas was a bright and curious child, and he excelled in school. He was particularly interested in science, and he dreamed of becoming a doctor.

After graduating from high school, Jonas attended the City College of New York, where he majored in chemistry. He then went on to medical school at New York University. After graduating from medical school, Jonas completed a residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The Development of the Polio Vaccine

In the early 1950s, polio was a major public health problem. Each year, thousands of children were paralyzed or killed by the disease. Jonas Salk was determined to find a way to prevent polio.

Salk began working on a polio vaccine in 1952. He used a method called "inactivated virus" vaccine. This method involved growing the polio virus in a laboratory and then killing it with chemicals. The killed virus was then injected into people, and it stimulated their immune systems to produce antibodies against polio.

Salk's polio vaccine was tested on a large scale in 1954. The results of the trial were very encouraging. The vaccine was found to be safe and effective. In 1955, the Salk polio vaccine was licensed for use in the United States.

The Impact of the Polio Vaccine

The Salk polio vaccine had a profound impact on the world. Within a few years of its , the number of cases of polio in the United States dropped by 90%. By the early 1960s, polio had been virtually eradicated from the country.

The Salk polio vaccine has also had a major impact on the world. The vaccine has been used to prevent polio in over 100 countries. As a result, millions of children have been saved from paralysis and death.
