Ramanujan was born in 1887 in a small village in southern India. He showed an early aptitude for mathematics, and by the age of 15, he had independently discovered many of the theorems that would later be attributed to him.

In 1903, Ramanujan left his village to attend college in Madras. However, he soon dropped out and returned home.
