Early Life and Career

Marcus Savage was born in 1704 in England. He came to South Carolina in 1720 and quickly established himself as a successful planter. He acquired several plantations, including Boone Hall, which he developed into one of the most prosperous rice plantations in the colony.

Savage was also a successful businessman. He owned several ships and traded with the West Indies and Europe. He was also a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives and served as a justice of the peace.

The King of the Lowcountry

Marcus Savage was known as the "King of the Lowcountry." He was one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in South Carolina. He owned over 1,000 slaves and controlled a vast amount of land.

Savage was a generous patron of the arts and sciences. He helped to found the Charleston Library Society and the College of Charleston. He also donated money to build churches and schools.

Legacy

Marcus Savage died in 1776. He is buried at Boone Hall Plantation. His legacy lives on through his descendants, who still own and operate Boone Hall Plantation today.
